Egyptian security forces detained a 24-year old man on Tuesday near the US Embassy in central Cairo after a bottle containing flammable chemicals caught fire in his backpack.
The incident in the Garden City area caused no casualties and embassy police said normal business resumed after investigations at the scene. The moment of the explosion was caught on CCTV cameras and posted by Twitter user Mahmoud Gamal. Another video showed a man on the ground being led away by the police.
According to Reuters, Egypt’s state information service released a statement naming the suspect as 24-year-old Abdullah Ayman Abdesamea.“Preliminary investigations suggest that he embraces some extremist ideas and was intending to use them to commit an act of aggression,” the statement said.
