While this may be hard to watch, wait for the happy ending.

While India was celebrating its Independence Day on Wednesday, a newborn baby from Valasaravakkam in Chennai was stuck in a stormwater drain. Thankfully, his cries were heard by a milkman who alerted K Geeta, a homemaker.

In a heart-stopping sequence (video above), Geeta is seen rescuing the baby and unwrapping his umbilical cord from around his neck. She named the baby Suthanthiram, meaning freedom in Tamil, and would like to adopt him if she is allowed.

The baby was taken to a clinic at Chinna Porur and later transferred to the Institute of Child Health in Egmore. Suthanthiram is now under the care of state government’s Cradle Baby Scheme, started by former chief minister J Jayalalithaa.

U Muthuraja, law and order inspector of Valsaravakkam police station told The Hindu, “It does not appear to be a birth in a hospital. We are carrying out an investigation. We will be taking strict action against the parents once we find them”.
