A recent fashion show in New York City finally took the word “catwalk” literally, with feline models appearing on the ramp.
The Algonquin Hotel on Times Square held its famous annual fashion show with the intriguing theme of “The Purring ’20s” to pay homage to its own rich and artistic history. Cats showed up on the runway, accompanied by their owners, dressed in finery designed by pet fashion designer Ada Nieves. In keeping with the theme, these included flapper dresses, tuxedos, bowler hats and feather headbands.
Apart from its literary and artistic associations, the hotel is famous for its history with cats. It has famously been occupied by felines since the early 1920s, and has had 12 resident cats since then, all of them rescued. The fashion show this year also commemorated the party debut of the 12th resident cat, Hamlet VIII, who presided over the show.
According to The Associated Press, organisers expected to raise more than $10,000 from the fashion show, with the help of tickets worth $75 and a silent auction. The show also helps to get some of the cats adopted.
