Ryan Giggs's Mumbai franchise was brought down to earth by Michel Salgado's Kochi in their Premier Futsal encounter on Saturday at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai. Mumbai, who beat Chennai 4-2 in their opening game, had started well and kept putting pressure on their opposition in the first two quarters, but to no avail. Both teams scored once each in the third quarter, before Kochi let loose and smashed three goals in the final quarter to take the game 4-1.
Mumbai's Giggs was the star attraction for the Chennai crowd, with many fans turning up in Manchester United jerseys, but it was Salgado who stole the show. He only had one goal to his name but was a constant threat in attack. Giggs also played a slick back-heel pass that set up his team's only goal.
In Saturday's other game, Kolkata and Bengaluru played out a 1-1 draw. Bengaluru’s marquee player Paul Scholes was at the centre of the action, literally, as he passed the ball around with ease. He eventually got an assist as Cidao gave Bengaluru the lead in the first quarter.
Bengaluru looked on top in the second quarter as well, but Kolkata found their way in and scored an equaliser towards the end. Both teams had chances in the final two quarters, but could not find a way through as the game ended 1-1.
