After the tragic Orlando shootings, presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump congratulated himself on being right about "Islamic terrorism". He even asked the incumbent President to "step down" for not using "radical Islam". There was also a senate hearing on the Obama administration's "wilful blindness" to "radical Islam".

Following these incidents, Obama decided to tackle the issues and the members of the Republican Party that criticised him head on in a speech from the US treasury department. “Do Republican officials actually agree with this?”, he asked towards the end of the speech, most of which covered, the seeming pointlessness, in Obama's opinion, of using a term that would "paint an entire religion with a broad stroke".

Doing so, in his words, would be to play into the hands of the terrorists who use an "us versus them" philosophy as a recruitment tool. "Groups like ISIL and al-Qaida want to make this war a war between Islam and America, or between Islam and the West. They want to claim that they are the true leaders of over a billion Muslims around the world who reject their crazy notions," he said.
