World champions Germany and second-ranked Belgium had not really set the stage alight in Euro 2016 prior to both their Round of 16 encounters on Sunday. While Germany had beaten Ukraine and Northern Ireland and drawn against Poland, Belgium had thumped Ireland 3-0 and edged Sweden 1-0, before losing to Italy 2-0. However, the two teams, who are both among favourites for the title, turned up in style in the pre-quarters.

Germany thrashed Slovakia 3-0 in Lille to set up a quarter-final against either Italy or Spain, who will meet on Monday. Jerome Boateng gave the Germans a lead in the eighth minute with a brilliant volley from outside the 18-yard box, before Mario Gomez provided them a 2-0 cushion just before half-time. The Germans were not done yet as Julian Draxler lashed in a volley in the second half to seal the win. Germany could have scored four had Mesut Ozil not missed a penalty in the first half.

In Sunday's other game, an Eden Hazard-inspired Belgium crushed Hungary's hopes of qualifying to the quarter-finals with a 4-0 rout. Hazard scored a superb solo goal to add to his match-winning display and was joined on the scoresheet by Toby Alderweireld, Michu Batshuayi and Yannick Carrasco. With the win, Belgium set up a quarter-final clash with Wales.
