So, what ARE comedians allowed to joke about in India? According to stand-up comic artist Kanan Gill, very little (video above).
Cut to a reality show that aired on Zee TV few years ago. Ek Se Badkar Ek: Chota Packet Bada Dhamaka has actor Annu Kapoor screaming, “Is cheez ke upar nahi bolne ka (Don’t you dare comment on this)”. A remixed version of this statement plays as a mix of images shows what's off-limit. Pretty much everything.
In this video Gill also reacts to comedian Sunil Pal’s statement on the stand-up comedy scene in India, by cutting to a clip from a film he starred in. Pal had said these stand up comedians get laughs by saying vulgar things and that their audience is made up of gays and lesbians intent on destroying society. Of course, Pal was joking.
