If we go by the world FIFA rankings, Argentina – which slogged it all the way to the World Cup finals a few years ago only to lose – are the number one football team in the world, followed by Belgium and then Chile.
A couple of good recent results of late have ensured that the South American team leapfrogged surprising leaders Belgium to the top spot. They were under-par in their qualifying campaign for the 2018 FIFA World Cup and went a goal down in a crucial game against Chile on March 25. However, they demonstrated tremendous fighting spirit to fight back and win 2-1. (video above)
Then a few days later, they had a far more comfortable outing against Bolivia at home with Lionel Messi scoring his 50th international goal and the team winning 2-0.
In any event, the South American nations are currently dominating world football. Apart from Argentina, four other South American nations are in the top ten with two of them - Chile at No. 3, Colombia at No. 4 - in the top five itself. The 2014 World Cup champions Germany are currently at the fifth spot.
