An under-construction flyover collapsed in Kolkata on Thursday afternoon killing several people and injuring many more. The flyover in North Kolkata, near Ganesh Talkies, was in a densely populated locality.
The video above, put up by the Bengali news channel 24 Ghanta, shows CCTV footage of the bridge collapsing on unsuspecting traffic – a moment of absolute terror.
Here's the scene after the horrific tragedy.
The flyover was a Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority project. It was initiated in 2007 and would have been among the longest in the city, connecting North Kolkata to Howrah. The Indian Express reported that it was near completion – four years behind schedule – but "right from inception, locals objected to its design as some stretches of the flyover crossed menacingly close to multi storied buildings, flanking on both sides of the existing road stretch."
Below is a video of rescue operations underway.
