Train #15906, the Dibrugarh-Kanyakumari Vivek Express, currently covers the longest railway route in India, connecting the north-eastern state of Assam to the southernmost city in the country. The video above is a time-lapse of this 83-hour journey, condensed into about two minutes. It was created by a Canadian tourist, Ed Hanley, who has documented his journey (he was the only passenger to do the whole route), on his blog.
The train was launched in 2011, taking over the distinction of being the longest journey in India from the Himsagar Express, which runs from Jammu to Kanyakumari. It is now the eighth longest train route in the world.
Covering a distance of 4,286 km, it goes through seven states – Assam, Nagaland, West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and, finally, Kerala.
Quaintly, Hanley also offers a look at garbage disposal aboard the train.
