It was the wrong lake. Thousands of dead fish surfaced on Bengaluru's Ulsoor Lake on Monday.
It's one of the other big lakes in the city, Bellandur Lake, that usually catches attention for the wrong reasons. It has been foaming strongly enough to be visible from space, and has also caught fire twice in the past year. Varthur Lake, too, has been producing foam owing to pollutants dumped into it.
But the video above, put up on YouTube by 'Hindu Bengaluru', showing dead fish floating on the lake, has come as an unpleasant surprise.
More so because, according to a report by NDTV, Ulsoor is one of the "cleaner" lakes in the city. However, a report by ANI states that the water at present gives off so foul an odour that no tourists are visiting the spot any more.
V Purushottam, the president of Ulsoor Welfare Society, told ANI that the rising level of pollution in the lake was because of sewage. "All the sewage from up-Bengaluru, and eastern Bengaluru, comes down this drain, which comes to the Ulsoor Lake. The entire sewage has got into the lake, oxygen levels have depleted as a result of which fish have died."
The official reason for the death of the fish is not known yet. Water from Ulsoor Lake is being sent for testing to find out the reason, Bangalore Mirror reported.
