In this audio (above), purportedly from the 2015 Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union Presidential elections, Kanhaiya Kumar – now the President – can be heard asking the ABVP candidate Gaurav Jha questions on the nationalism and Hindu values of his party.
Kumar starts with potshots at Jha, questioning the ABVP's claim to Indian values and nationalism.
"Gauravji your people standing at the back, when people say Vande Mataram they say Vande Vyapam," Kumar begins with a sly reference to the scam in BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh.
After this the barbs fly thick and fast.
"I have a question for you. You consider yourself the guardian of Hinduism, of nationalism. Tell me, when India's constitution was prepared by Babasaheb, RSS refused to accept it, saying an untouchable has made it."
"Your people burnt the flag."
"And the RSS that talks about Hindu dharma and Indian values couldn't find an outfit that was Indian? They got half pants from Hitler."
"So I want to ask what sort of nationalism is this that the soldiers asking for one rank one pension are lathi charged at Jantar Mantar? Is your nationalism like 'achhe din' a lie, an election time promise?"
In the rest of the clip, the other candidates' questions are mostly targeted towards Kanhaiya, who marks himself out as the clear crowd favourite.
Below is a clip from the same presidential debate featuring Kumar. Here too he targets the ABVP.
