Kite-flying season in India is fraught with danger for birds. The kite strings coated with glass routinely injure and even kill them.
In Gujarat the popular kite festival, Uttarayan, is organised ahead of Makar Sankranti. The video above features the work of an organisation called Prayas in Surat, working towards raising awareness about this issue and caring for the injured birds.
Darshan Desai, a member of Prayas, says "We are getting lesser number of calls than past years. Maybe it's due to the awareness that the team has done by going from school to school and college to college...".
Two camps to rescue injured birds were organised across the city. "At both the camps, rescuers were seen trying to rescue birds covered in blood, mostly pigeons with a cut under the wing, and after assessing them, hurrying them to an operating table if required," ANI reported.
The trust’s president Rohit Gangwal said the aim is to save the lives of as many birds possible from the sharpened, glass-coated thread.
