The New Year has come and gone and cricket fans are still probably still recovering from their revelries. And if you hadn’t kept an eye on the cricket, you might just have missed out something special – New Zealand’s Martin Guptill did a Brendon McCullum and slammed an incredible unbeaten 93 off just 30 balls in a One Day International against Sri Lanka in Christchurch on December 28.
In an innings peppered with eight sixes and nine boundaries, Guptill, who already has a World Cup double century to his name, was unstoppable, racing to 46 off 12 balls and only just missing the record of scoring the fastest ever half-century. He probably had his eyes set on a century but was undone by Sri Lanka’s paltry first innings score – they had been shot out for 117 which New Zealand chased down in only 8.2 overs.
Twenty seven came off a Dushmantha Chameera over as Guptill ran roughshod over an inexperienced Sri Lankan attack. A few overs later, Guptil smashed four sixes in one over off Jeffrey Vandersay, to reach 76. By the time the chase was over, Guptill’s fellow opener Tim Latham had played only 19 balls and had scored only 16 runs – such was the extent of Guptill’s domination.
