In his new avatar with the Bharatiya Janata Party (from which he has now been suspended), former Indian cricketer Kirti Azad has developed quite a reputation for putting other politicians on a sticky wicket as Arun Jaitley will undoubtedly attest to. As it turns out, Azad might be just carrying over those skills from the cricket field.
During his playing days, Azad was an aggressive right-handed batsman but it was his sharp off-breaks which gave India one of their greatest wins. It was the semi-final of the 1983 World Cup on June 22 and a confident England were up against underdogs India. And though England got off to a good start, their innings hit a plateau once Azad unveiled his range of fast off-break darters.
Not just content with bottling up the run rate, Azad also had the last laugh as he dismissed the world’s greatest all-rounder at that time Ian Botham with an unplayable shooter. Jaitley, be very wary!
