Most people would prefer to never have to be inside a police station. Especially an Indian police station.

If you must gain some familiarity with one, then, this might be the best way to do it. On a computer, rather than in a brick-and-mortar building.

Police stations can be intimidating places. Harrowing accounts of within the stations are commonplace and police men have a reputation of being overbearing with a dismal record of human rights violations against them.

In the video above Maja Daruwala, Director Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, introduces the virtual police station, a tool created by the NGO for people to understand (read: shed their fear for) police stations.

What happens when you enter this digital thana? You'll learn how to file a FIR or General Diary – a crucial test of comprehensibility and patience – explore the rooms, and understand the roles of different police officers

There's a special focus on how women complaints are to be handled. "The important thing is you get to see how it should be done and how it should not be done," Daruwala says. The video below is part of the website's interactive package.

Created by Firefly Multimedia along with Studio Ananas and CHRI, they have used the latest and greatest in video innovation to create this tool, Daruwala says.
