The internet can be a great thing, allowing information to flow freely and making services that would have once been restricted to the elite commonplace. But it can also be a dangerous thing, as John Oliver points out in the latest episode of his show Last Week Tonight. At the end of the day, the internet is peopled by the same folks who are out on our streets, and with the world being a terrifying, uncomfortable place for women, the 'net is no different. Women have to face regular threats and harassment and the challenge of dealing with it almost become worse because, as Oliver points out, how many police officers would take a woman seriously if they walked into a police station and say "I was threatened on Twitter?"
