Three days after the Cyclone Komen made landfall in Bangladesh, the eastern and north eastern states of India have been hit by massive rains and floods. On Sunday, 20 people were killed at Zoumoal village in Manipur’s Chandel district in a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall over the last few days. The water levels of several rivers have hit the danger mark and washed away bridges and national highways besides rendering thousands of people homeless in Manipur. This year’s floods have been so devastating that many reports have locals claiming these are the worst in the last two centuries, displacing lakhs of people from their homes.
The overflowing rivers have flooded many parts of the state, mainly Thoubal and adjoining Chandel districts, where the water levels have gone much higher. Moreh, a town on the India-Myanmar border, and Jiribam have been cut off from the rest of the state due to landslides caused by flash floods. The normal vehicular movement between Imphal-Jiribam section of NH-37 has also been disrupted because of the heavy downpour.
To get a glimpse of the recent natural disaster, KhutSem, a team of electronic engineers have uploaded a drone video on YouTube, which offers a glimpse of the view over Thoubal, which has been hit hardest by the floods. The camera captures streets and houses completely flooded, with water filling the frame in every direction. Though the waters are now receding, it's clear that it will take some time for Manipur to recover from this devastation.
