Surveillance cameras are not very like-able. CCTV cameras mounted on walls, watching and recording people's activities, just feel cold and frankly a bit creepy. Imagine, instead, little blinking owls plastered all over the city. On second thoughts, don't, because these uber-cute cameras won't survive cuteness-hunters. But they may be pretty perfect for your house.
Called Ulo, which sounds a lot like our own obsequious ullu, these cameras were made for CCTV-loving Indian homes. Ulo the surveillance camera interacts with you through eye expressions, so when it's tired you know the battery needs recharging, when it has to take a picture it blinks, and squints when someone is watching a live video. There are other customisations available as well – for instance if it has the record of a birthday it will be happy that day, or if you have an appointment it will look puzzled because you shouldn't be at home at the time.
The shape and colour of the eyes can be customised too. It connects to your phone and/or computer and sends you live updates.
It's a Kickstarter project by Vivien Muller, who says about storing the footage, "Ulo only stores a few minutes of video locally. Nothing is sent over a distant third party server. Think of Ulo as your own personal server, so there are no extra fees. The owl only sends data to your secure devices when needed. Each device has its own password + a second step authentification. (sic)"
Despite all this cuteness going for Ulo, there are concerns about its battery life, outdoor use and the scope of its vision. Still, who wouldn't want a wise old surveillance camera?
