When they weren't busy serving customers at their tea shop in the coastal town of Kochi in Kerala, Mohana and Vijayan, both in their 60s, had one unfulfilled dream. They wanted to visit the USA.
Astonishingly, the couple had already been to several countries around the world, including Britain, France, Austria, Egypt, Switzerland, Malaysia, Singapore and the UAE, proving that wanderlust cares nothing for economic barriers.
On the back of two public campaigns and donations, the couple recently fulfilled that dream, making the USA the 17th country that they have visited.
Invisible Wings, a documentary by Hari M Mohanan records their extraordinary story. Given the currency exchange rates, it hasn't been an easy journey at all. They saved every penny, spending as little as possible on their daily needs, and borrowing to bridge the expense gap.
Once the loan was cleared, the couple would travel again, using the same means for financing. “I save Rs 300 a day for our tickets and spend just $10 or less on picking up some tiny souvenirs from the places of visit. We don’t spend anything more,” Vijayan says about saving money while he is travelling.
For this latest trip, the funds were raised by well-wishers after two public campaigns. Of their visit to the US, Vijayan says, "We loved New York and Los Angeles. There are so many memories from our trip, but my wife enjoyed at Universal studios the most. We thank everyone who helped us.”
Vijayan credits his father for his passion for travelling. "He took me to different places since I was six years old. We went to Madurai, Palani, and many other places. Those travel memories with my dad helped me unleash my dreams."
Mohana got the travel bug from her husband when she married him 40 years ago. She says, "I was really excited when we first travelled abroad. Belonging to a very poor family, I never dreamt of a life like this. Later along with him I too became obsessed with the journeys. Switzerland is my favourite among the places we visited." Seeing the statue of Jesus in Israel left her rooted to her spot for a long time, she confesses.
