Tabrez Noorani’s Love Sonia will be released in India on September 14. Produced by Noorani and David Womark, the drama centres on a 17-year-old woman who endangers her life to save her sister from a global human trafficking network that spans India, Hong Kong and Los Angeles.
Love Sonia features Mrunal Thakur, Frieda Pinto, Manoj Bajpayee, Richa Chadha, Rajkummar Rao, Sai Tamhankar, Adil Hussain, Demi Moore and Mark Duplass. It was premiered at the London Indian Film Festival in June and was also shown at the Melbourne International Film Festival in August.
In an interview in 2016, Noorani had told Reuters that he was inspired to make Love Sonia after he read about an incident in Los Angeles in 2003, when some women were found in a container shipped from China. One of the women was an Indian, he said.
Love Sonia marks the directorial debut of Noorani, who has previously produced films such as Slumdog Millionaire (2008), The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011) and Life of Pi (2012). “After the incredible audience reactions in London and Melbourne, I am thrilled that the movie is now releasing back home in India,” Noorani said in a press release. “I am blessed with a powerful ensemble cast and all of them have contributed to make this film special.”
