Karan Johar’s next movie is titled Takht and stars Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal and Bhumi Pednekar, the filmmaker announced on Thursday. The movie explores an “epic battle for the Mughal throne”, according to a tweet by Johar. Media reports have speculated that the film will examine the succession battle between Dara Shikoh and his younger brother, Aurangzeb, in the seventeenth century.
The movie will be released in 2020. Sumit Roy (Zubaan, 2015) has written the screenplay.
Takht is the third big-budget historical film announced by Johar’s Dharma Productions after Kesari and Kalank. Anurag Singh’s Kesari, starring Akshay Kumar in the lead role, is the retelling of the 19th century battle of Saragarhi between 21 Sikh soldiers of British India and an estimated 10,000 Pashtun tribesmen. Abhishek Varman’s Kalank is a period drama set around the Partition. Both films are scheduled for 2019.
