The trailer of Pradeep Sarkar’s Helicopter Eela was released on the birthday of lead actress Kajol on Sunday. The September 7 release sees Kajol playing a single mother who fulfills her musical ambitions while trying to create a bond with her adolescent son (Riddhi Sen).
Helicopter Eela also stars Neha Dhupia and Tota Roy Chowdhury. The movie has been produced by Ajay Devgn FFilms and Jayantilal Gada’s Pen India Limited.
The trailer reveals the ups, downs and in-betweens that mark the relationship between Eela and her son. She enrols in the same class as him to complete her education, but the forced closeness grates on his nerves. A rift between mother and son encourages Eela to revisit her past as a singer and musician.
The film is based on Anand Gandhi’s Gujarati play Beta Kaagdo. The screenplay is by Gandhi and Mitesh Shah. In an interview in 2017, Gandhi revealed that the play was loosely based on his mother, and that he had been thinking of a directing a movie adaptation himself.
“In the last 12 years, I have been thinking of adapting the play into a film,” Gandhi told PTI. “If Ship of Theseus had not happened, this would have been my first film.”
