Netflix dropped the first teaser of its upcoming 10-episode limited series Maniac, directed by Cary Fukunaga (True Detective, Beasts of No Nation), and starring Jonah Hill and Emma Stone, on Sunday.
Annie Landsberg (Emma Stone) is reeling from broken relationships with her sister and mother, while Owen Milgrim (Jonah Hill), a schizophrenic, belongs to an industrialist’s family from New York. Annie and Owen become part of a mysterious three-day pharmaceutical trial under the supervision of James K Mantleray (Justin Theroux), who claims to have invented a radical form of treatment that can cure all problems of the mind and heart.
Hill and Stone had worked together 11 years ago in the cult comedy Superbad (2007). Maniac has been scripted by American writer Patrick Somerville from the Norwegian series of the same name. The supporting cast includes Sonoya Mizuno (Annihilation) and veteran actress Sally Field. Maniac will be released on Netflix on September 21.
