The much-awaited eighth and final season of the HBO series Game of Thrones will be aired in the first half of 2019, network president Casey Bloys said at a Television Critics Association event.
Bloys did not reveal anything about the season, Deadline magazine reported, except to say it will be “pretty great”.
HBO had previously announced four prequel projects to Game of Thrones, including a pilot episode written by Jane Goldman (Kingsman: The Secret Service, X-Men: First Class). But Bloys hinted that all but Goldman’s contribution might be shelved or worked on for a later time, Deadline reported.
Goldman’s prequel, which will be set 10,000 years before the events featured in Game of Thrones, will begin production next year. According to the television network, it will chronicle “the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour”. The director and cast for the show are yet to be finalised.
