“Love is madness,” declares the trailer for Sajid Ali’s romantic drama Laila Majnu, which was released on Tuesday. Starring Tripti Dimri, Mir Sarwar and Avinash Tiwary, Ali’s film is the latest retelling of the legendary story of star-crossed lovers Laila and Majnu. Among the best-known adaptations is the 1976 film staring Ranjeeta and Rishi Kapoor.
The story is set in Kashmir. Majnu (Sarwar), we are told, is an incorrigible flirt and a “typical rich, spoilt brat”. But these traits don’t deter Laila (Dimri) from falling in love with him. She finds them interesting, she says. The fate of their love story, though, is pre-decided and the lovers cannot but help head towards the inevitable.
Co-produced by Ekta Kapoor and presented by Ali’s brother and filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, Laila and Majnu will be released on September 7.
