A teenager struggles to come to terms with his sexuality in the trailer of Boy Erased. Directed by Joel Edgerton, the coming-of-age drama is based on Garrard Conley’s 2016 memoir of the same name. Conley writes about his experience with conversion therapy, the dubious practice that attempts to alter sexual orientation.
When 19-year-old Jared (Lucas Hedges) is outed to his small-town Baptist pastor father (Russell Crowe) and mother (Nicole Kidman), he is faced with an ultimatum: attend a conversion therapy programme, or be shunned by his family, friends, and faith. “Boy Erased is the true story of one young man’s struggle to find himself while being forced to question every aspect of his identity,” according to the official synopsis.
This is Edgerton’s second directorial effort after The Gift (2015). Boy Erased will be released in the United States of America on November 2.
Hedges was nominated for an Academy Award for Manchester By The Sea (2016). He was last seen in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) and Lady Bird (2017).
