At the 73rd Annual Golden Globes that were held on January 10, Leonardo DiCaprio had a tough time keeping a straight face through the night, whether it was during his acceptance speech for winning the Best Actor trophy for The Revenant, thanking “indigenous people” for his win, or watching other celebrities heading to the stage for their gongs.
As expected, comedian Ricky Gervais’s risqué monologue at the ceremony sent ripples through the beautifully dressed crowd. Gervais cracked jokes about Caitlyn Jenner and Jennifer Lawrence and took on Hollywood’s wage disparity, but the gag about shoving up the Golden Globe (of which he has three) into an unmentionable part of his body had the crowd in splits.
The night’s biggest win (and fail) belonged to Leonardo DiCaprio. Here is his speech on winning for The Revenant, directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. It is DiCaprio’s third win after The Departed (2005) and The Wolf of Wall Street (2014).
And this is the moment when his face morphs into a meme when Lady Gaga accidentally brushes her hand against his arm on her way to receive her trophy for Best Actress in her debut television show, American Horror Story.
Jennifer Lawrence took home her third trophy too for Joy. She has previously won for Silver Linings Playbook (2013) and American Hustle (2014). Her hat-trick is courtesy David O Russell, who has directed all the three films. Though all wasn’t well backstage, where Lawrence had to reprimand a reporter for not paying attention.
Taraji P Henson distributed cookies on her way to collecting her trophy for her performance as Cookie Lyon in the television series Empire, for which she won Best Actress. DiCaprio and Lady Gaga got a cookie each for their awkward moment. Henson had an even spunkier moment on the stage when she shut up the teleprompter asking her to wind up her speech. “I waited 20 years for this, you’ll gonna wait,” she said.
BFFs Amy Schumer and Jennifer Lawrence had a moment when the duo introduced themselves on stage, reminding viewers of the sisterhood of last year’s hosts, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. “Hello, I’m J.Law,” Lawrence said. “And I am A.Schu,” Schumer stepped on the gas.
