They call themselves Voctronica – a beatboxing and a cappella band. Members Avinash Tewari, Raj Verma, Arjun Nair, Warsha Easwar, and Clyde Rodrigues began training through YouTube videos and are something of an internet sensation with their new tribute to AR Rahman.
Picking songs in a chronological order to mark the rise of the so-called Mozart of Madras, the band has come up with the medley Evolution of A. R. Rahman. They sing hits from Roja, Bombay, Dil Se, Sapnay, Rangeela, Taal, Lagaan, Yuva, Rang De Basanti, Slumdog Millionaire and several other films.
The band uses only vocals to create harmony, melody, and beats. Catch them at the 2.17-minute mark in the video. The singers mimic the electronic sounds of Rahman from the introduction of Dhakka Laga in the movie Yuva (2004), which had superb synth music.
