YouTube is never starved for viral sensations. Here is Mark Angel from Nigeria. The medical school dropout posts his comedy sketches online every week, and some of them are hilarious. Here is the one about two schoolgirls.
Each video is a situational comedy that features relatable characters. Angel acts in his short sketches, as does recurring character Denilson Igwe. Some of the jokes are scatological and the canned laughter track can be a bit too insistent. But the cleverness of these videos lies in Angel’s ability to connect with his largely Nigerian fan base by mining humour out of everyday situations.
Angel cut his teeth in Nollywood, as the local entertainment industry is known, and made a series of short films before launching his studio, Mechanic Pictures Nigeria. Films made in Nigeria use video and digital formats, which keeps production costs low and ensures distribution across affordable formats such as CDs. The internet is best suited for this lo-fi type of filmmaking. Some of Angel’s humour might not travel beyond the locals it is meant for, but he has a fine actor in little Emannuella, who has the timing of a professional.
