Expectations from the new movie by Alejandro G Inarritu (Birdman, Babel) have been high ever since the trailer emerged. The Revenant stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy and Domhnall Gleeson, among others, and opens in India on January 8.

Based on the Michael Punke novel by the same name, The Revenant is the survival saga of nineteenth-century explorer and hunter Hugh Glass (DiCaprio) who is mauled by a bear during an expedition and abandoned by his team. Glass returns for revenge. This period Kill Bill has been shot by the brilliant Mexican cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, who has worked extensively with Terrence Malik and Alfonso Cuaron. The movie has been shot with natural light in the Canadian wilderness, giving Lubezki only a few hours to work his magic on each shot. A peek at the movie stills and Lubezki's Instagram account shows snow-clad picturesque landscapes and Lubezki's ability to capture extraordinary frames in any location.

The Revenant is already being tipped for Oscar glory. Might it give DiCaprio the Best Actor Oscar that has denied to him all these years?
