Twitter on Tuesday permanently suspended the account of actor Kangana Ranaut.

The actor had tweeted about the West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party leadership alleging that party supporters were being targeted after the results of the Assembly elections were announced. She urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to “tame” Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee using his “virat roop” or destructive side from “early 2000s”. She was purportedly referring to the 2002 Gujarat riots.

Her tweet sparked outrage and social media users called Twitter to take action.

A Twitter spokesperson said Ranaut had repeatedly violated their policy on “hateful conduct and abusive behavior”, NDTV reported. “We’ve been clear that we will take strong enforcement action on behaviour that has the potential to lead to offline harm,” the spokesperson said. “The referenced account has been permanently suspended for repeated violations of Twitter Rules...”

The spokesperson said that Twitter rules were applied judiciously and impartially to all. “As explained in our abusive behaviour policy, you may not engage in the targeted harassment of someone, or incite other people to do so,” the social media platform said. “We consider abusive behavior an attempt to harass, intimidate, or silence someone else’s voice.”

Meanwhile, Ranaut released a statement criticising the social platform for its action.

“Twitter has only proved my point they are Americans and by birth, a white person feels entitled to enslave a brown person, they want to tell you what to think, speak or do,” she said. “I have many platforms I can use to raise my voice including my own art in the form of cinema. But my heart goes out to the people of this nation who have been tortured, enslaved and censored for thousands of years and still their is no end to the suffering.”

The actor also posted a video on Instagram where she termed the silence of the “liberal” international media on West Bengal violence as their “conspiracy against India”.
