A day before a massive countrywide vaccination drive against coronavirus is set to commence, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Friday said the step is “the beginning of the end” of Covid-19.

The Centre has issued guidelines to states and Union Territories. It said vaccination is allowed only for those who are above the age of 18 years. Women who are pregnant or not sure of their pregnancy and lactating mothers should not receive the jibe.

India registered 15,590 new coronavirus cases on Friday, taking the overall count to 1,05,27,683. The country’s toll rose by 191 to 1,51,918. India’s active cases stood at 2,13,027, while the number of recoveries reached 1,01,62,738

Globally, the coronavirus has infected more 9.30 crore people and killed 19.91 lakh, according to John Hopkins University. More than 5.13 crore people have recovered from the infection in the world.

10.19 pm: West Bengal Chief Minister will supervise the coronavirus vaccination drive in the state on Saturday from the secretariat via video, reports PTI. The chief minister is also likely to be present at the inauguration programme of one of the 210 centres in the state.

6.25 pm: Sanitation workers who attend to Covid-19 wards at Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) would be among the first people to be administered the vaccine in the state on Saturday, reports PTI. GMCH Dean Dr Shivanand Bandekar said they have selected 100 sanitation workers attached to the hospital, including those hired through a private firm, for receiving the first doses of vaccine in the state.

5.31 pm: Nepal has approved AstraZeneca’s Covishield vaccine, developed in India, the government says, according to Reuters. “Conditional permission has been granted for emergency use authorisation of Covishield vaccine against Covid-19 in Nepal,” the Department of Drug Administration says.

10.09 am: The Centre on Thursday issued coronavirus vaccine guidelines stating the precautions that should be followed during the roll out, reports NDTV.

  • Vaccination is allowed only for those who are above the age of 18 years.
  • Women who are pregnant or not sure of their pregnancy and lactating mothers should not receive the vaccine.  
  • Interchangeability of vaccines is not permitted. The second dose of the vaccine should be the same as the first one.

  1. Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said that some individuals may have side effects after they are administered the coronavirus vaccine. This includes mild fever, pain at injection site and body ache, he said.
