The Adityanath-led government in Uttar Pradesh on Friday suspended five police officers, including the superintendent of police, after a 19-year-old Dalit woman from Hathras district was brutally assaulted and raped by four upper caste men in the state. Earlier this week, the woman succumbed to her injuries in Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital.

Criticism mounted after the woman’s family said her body was cremated by police without their consent, an allegation officials have continued to deny.
