Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that the coronavirus crisis is testing India’s resilience, health system and economic situation. He made the remark during his keynote address at the United States-India Strategic Partnership Forum.
Maharashtra on Thursday reported its biggest one-day rise of 18,105 coronavirus cases, taking its tally to 8,43,844. The state’s toll rose by 391 to 25,586.
India’s coronavirus count touched 38,53,407 earlier in the day, with a record 83,883 new cases reported in 24 hours. The toll rose by 1,043 to 67,376.
Globally, the coronavirus has infected more than 2.61 crore people and killed over 8.64 lakh, according to the Johns Hopkins University’s tracker. Over 1.73 crore people across the world have recovered from the infection.

10.47 pm: West Bengal records 2,984 new cases and 55 deaths. The total number of cases are now 1,71,681 and the number of deaths is 3,394.
10.33 pm: Rajasthan has reported a record 1,553 cases in a day, according to PTI. Fourteen people have died today. The total number of cases is now 86,227, the fatalities 1,095. Over 70,000 people have been discharged so far.
10 pm: Himachal Pradesh now has a total of 6,615 cases, ANI reports. The number of active and recovered cases is 1,708 and 4,818. The toll is 48.
9.48 pm: Mumbai reports 1,526 new cases of the coronavirus, while 859 patients recover today. The total number of active cases in the city has risen to 21,442. As many as 37 patients died today.

4.55 pm: The toll from the coronavirus in Uttar Pradesh rises to 3,691 on Thursday, with 75 more fatalities reported in 24 hours, PTI reports. The tally of infections rises by 5,622 to 2,47,101.
4.50 pm: During its press briefing, the health ministry said that in the past three weeks, there has been an increase in case fatality trajectory in Karnataka and Delhi . “There has been a sudden spike in number of active cases and deaths in Delhi,” Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan adds. “We are actively working with the Delhi government to take fresh measures, there have been meetings at the lieutenant-governor level as well.”
4.47 pm: Bihar recorded 1,992 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, taking the state’s count of active cases to 18,029, ANI reports.
4.22 pm: Bhushan says that the number of Covid-19 deaths per million population in India is 49 compared to the global average of 111.
4.17 pm: There has been progressive increase in the number of recovered cases,” the health secretary says at the daily press briefing. “The exact number of recovered cases are 29,70,492, the active cases are 8,15,538,” he adds. “The recovered cases are 3.5 times higher than the current active cases.”

Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has states to consider waiving requirements that would “prevent these facilities from becoming fully operational by November 1, 2020.”

- India’s coronavirus count touched 37,69,523 with 78,357 new cases. The toll rose by 1,045 to 66,333. As many as 29,01,908 patients have recovered from the infection in the country, pushing the recovery rate to 76.98%. The fatality rate has declined to 1.76%. There are 8,01,282, active cases in the country, comprising 21.26% of the total caseload.
- Maharashtra registered its biggest-single day rise of 17,433 new cases, taking the state’s tally to 8,25,739. The toll rose to 25,195 with 292 more fatalities recorded in 24 hours. Andhra Pradesh’s tally of coronavirus cases crossed 4.5 lakh, after 10,392 new cases were recorded in 24 hours. The state now has 4,55,531 infections and the toll is 4,125. Tamil Nadu reported 5,990 new cases and 98 deaths, taking the state’s overall count of infections to 4,39,959. The toll stood at 7,516.
- The Centre released Standard Operating Procedures to be followed while conducting examinations and for the resumption of metro rail services during the coronavirus outbreak.
- The Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund, or PM CARES, received Rs 3,076 crore in donations in five days between March 27 and March 31, according to an audit statement the government has made public. The statement, made for the financial year 2019-’20, deals with donations only from the time the fund was set up (March 27) to the closing of the accounting year (March 31).
- Opposition leaders criticised the Narendra Modi government’s decision to cancel the Question Hour during the Parliament session that will start on September 14 amid the coronavirus crisis.
