India on Sunday reported 63,489 new coronavirus cases in the country, according to the Ministry of Health. The toll was up by 944 to 49,980. This took the total number of cases in the country to 25,89,682.
The positivity rate, which gives an indication of the prevalence of the disease, stood at 8.50%.
The health ministry said India’s Case Fatality Rate is one of the lowest in the world and stood at 1.93% as of Sunday. “The steady rise in recoveries has ensured that the percentage caseload of the country is reducing,” a statement by the ministry added.
The Centre has said that the recovery rate in 32 states and Union Territories has exceeded 50%. More than 18 lakh people in the country have recovered from the disease so far.
India has so far conducted at least 2,93,09,703 tests, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research. On Saturday alone, 7.46 lakh tests were conducted.
Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are the three states that recorded the highest number of cases in the last 24 hours. Maharashtra reported an increase of 12,614 new coronavirus cases on Saturday evening, taking the state’s tally to 5,84,754. With 322 deaths, the toll stood at 19,749.
Tamil Nadu saw an increase of 5,860 new coronavirus infections, taking the total to 3,32,105. The southern state’s toll rose by 127 to 5,641. Andhra Pradesh reported 8,732 new cases to take the tally to 2,81,817, including 88,138 active cases and 2,562 deaths.
Bihar became the eighth state in the country to have reported more than one lakh cases on Saturday. Cases in Odisha are also on the rise. The state reported 2,924 new coronavirus infections on Saturday, taking its tally to 60,050, according to ANI.
Meanwhile, in Assam, the coronavirus tally breached the 75,000-mark after 1,057 new cases were reported on Saturday, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. The toll rose by eight to 182. The state now has 75,558 coronavirus cases, Sarma added. “Our positivity rate continues to be low at 5.08 per cent, which gives us confidence,” he tweeted.
India remains the third-worst coronavirus-hit country in the world after the United States and Brazil. The US has reported more than 53.59 lakh cases and 1,69,467 deaths so far, according to the Johns Hopkins University. Brazil’s tally, meanwhile, stood at 33,17,096 and its toll reached a huge 1.07 lakh.
Globally, the coronavirus has infected 2.14 crore people and claimed over 7.71 lakh lives, according to the Johns Hopkins University’s coronavirus tracker. More than 1.3 crore people have recovered so far.
