Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said he has tested positive for the coronavirus. Shah said that he got himself tested after showing certain symptoms of the infection. Meanwhile, actor Amitabh Bachchan has been discharged from hospital after he tested negative for the coronavirus.

India’s coronavirus count crossed the 17-lakh mark this morning after 54,735 new cases were reported in 24 hours. There are now 17,50,723 cases, while the toll rose by 853 to 37,364.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit tested positive and was admitted to a hospital in Chennai. The Bharatiya Janata Party’s Uttar Pradesh unit chief Swatantra Dev Singh said he has tested positive for Covid-19.

The global coronavirus count crossed 1.76 crore on Sunday morning, and the number of deaths rose to 6,82,931, according to the Johns Hopkins University. As many as 1.04 crore people have recovered.

8.38 pm: Mumbai records 1,105 coronavirus cases, 393 recoveries and 49 deaths on Sunday, reports ANI. The city’s tally stands at 1,16,451, including 88,299 recoveries, 21,412 active patients and 6,444 deaths.

8.36 pm: Record 49 coronavirus fatalities in West Bengal takes the toll to 1,678, reports PTI, citing the state health department. Highest single-day increase of 2,739 new infections takes case count to 75,516.

8.15 pm: Maharashtra’s coronavirus case count rises to 4,41,228 after 9,509 new cases, reports ANI. The state has 1,48,537 active cases, 2,76,809 recoveries and 15,576 deaths so far.

7.46 pm: Andhra Pradesh registers 8,555 new coronavirus cases in 24 hours. The state’s case count stands at 1,58,764, including 74,404 active cases, 82,886 recoveries, and 1,474 deaths, reports ANI.

7.38 pm: Karnataka reports 5,532 new coronavirus cases and 84 deaths, taking the state’s overall case count to 1,34,819 and toll to 2,496. The state’s number of active cases stands at 74,590, the state health bulletin says, according to ANI.

7.35 pm: Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation registers 13 new Covid-19 cases in Mumbai’s Dharavi neighbourhood, reports ANI. There are 80 active cases and the overall tally in the area stands at 2,573.

7 pm: Tamil Nadu records 5,875 new coronavirus cases, taking state tally to 2,57,613, including 1,96,483 recoveries and 4,132 deaths, reports ANI, citing the state’s health bulletin.

6.30 pm: Kerala records one Covid-19 death on Sunday, taking the state’s overall toll to 82, reports ANI, citing the state Health Minister KK Shailaja. The state’s active case count stands at 11,342 and a total of 14,467 patients have recovered so far.

6 pm: Bharatiya Janata Party’s Uttar Pradesh unit chief Swatantra Dev Singh says he has tested positive for Covid-19. “I urge all those who came in contact with me to follow the guidelines, quarantine themselves and get tested if needed,” he tweets.

5.04 pm: Actor Amitabh Bachchan has been discharged from hospital after he tested negative for the coronavirus, his son Abhishek Bachchan says in a tweet. He, however, is still in hospital.

4.55 pm: Union Home Minister Amit Shah says he has tested positive for the coronavirus. “After showing symptoms of coronavirus, I got tested and the result was positive. My health is fine, but doctors have advised that I get hospitalised. I urge those have come in contact with me in the last few days, please isolate and get yourself tested.”

3.47 pm: Assam releases guidelines allowing malls and gyms to operate between Monday and Friday on the same side of a street, where other shops are allowed in Kamrup Metropolitan District and both sides in all other districts, reports ANI. Night curfew will be implemented between 6 pm and 6 am.

3.10 pm: Delhi registers 961 coronavirus cases, taking the Capital’s tally to 1,37,677. The toll stands at 4,004. There are 10,356 active cases, and 1,23,317 people have recovered so far.

2.00 pm: The Indian Council of Medical Research is planning to set up a registry of hospitalised Covid-19 patients across the country to collect real time data on the outbreak, PTI reports, quoting officials. The project will be done in collaboration with the Union health ministry and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences and will help help researchers and policy makers understand effectiveness of investigational therapies, adverse effects taking place and generate evidence for improving the treatment of Covid-19 patients.

1.57 pm: Himachal Pradesh’s tally of coronavirus cases rises to 2,643 on Sunday, ANI reports, quoting the state health department. There are 1,109 active cases, 1,505 recoveries and 12 deaths in the state so far.

1.56 pm: Streets in Chennai wear a deserted look as a complete lockdown is being observed in Tamil Nadu on Sunday, ANI reports.

12.15 pm: Telangana reports 1,891 new cases in a day, ANI reports. This takes the total number of cases to 66,677, and the toll stands at 540.

12.02 pm: Puducherry reports 200 new Covid-19 cases in 24 hours on Sunday morning. The total number of cases in Puducherry rises to 3,806, including 1,445 active cases, 2,309 recovered cases and 52 deaths.

11.55 am: A total of 9,566 Maharashtra police personnel have been infected with Covid-19 so far, ANI reports. There are 1,929 active cases and 103 personnel have died.

11.15 am: Odisha reports 1,434 new coronavirus cases in 24 hours. The state now has a total of 34,913 infections.

11.04 am: Rajasthan has recorded 561 new cases and nine deaths in 24 hours as of Sunday morning, ANI reports. The state now has a total of 43,804 cases and 703 deaths.

11.02 am: The recoveries to deaths ratio is 96.84 to 3.16 now, ANI reports. The recovery rate is currently 65.44%.

11 am: The Indian Council of Medical Research says 1,98,21,831 samples have been tested till August 1. Of these, 4,63,172 samples were tested on Saturday.

10.40 am: Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Minister Kamla Rani Varun dies in Lucknow. She had tested positive for the novel coronavirus on July 18.

8.53 pm: Delhi now stands at the 12th position among the states and Union Territories in terms of active cases of the coronavirus, Health Minister Satyendar Jain says, according to PTI. “It [Delhi] was on the second position a month-and-a-half ago,” he adds. However, he warns that people need to be very vigilant and practice physical distancing norms diligently. Jain adds that the doubling rate of cases in Delhi is around 50 days at present, while “it is probably 32 days on an average nationally”.

8.47 pm: The Delhi government has brought down the number of containment zones in the city by over 200, bringing relief to as many as 241,888 people from stringent lockdown rules, the Hindustan Times reports, quoting minister Kailash Gahlot. The drive to restructure Delhi’s containment zones was conducted between July 28 and July 30 to free up more localities, permit movement of more people and further boost the economy, he says.

8.43 pm: The Jawaharlal Nehru University will remain closed till August 31, in line with the Ministry of Home Affairs’ Unlock 3 guidelines, PTI reports. In a statement the university asks the students to not return to the campus until further notice. However, the administrative and other university functions will continue during this period as per the earlier guidelines, the statement adds

8.37 pm: A case was lodged against 10 persons, six of whom were detained, on Saturday for allegedly attacking a doctor over the death of a suspected Covid-19 patient in Gujarat’s Gir Somnath district, PTI reports. The incident took place on Friday night at a government-designated Covid-19 hospital in Veraval, after a 20-year-old woman died hours after she was shifted from a private facility, a Veraval City police station officer tells the news agency.

8.32 pm: Bihar’s tally of coronavirus cases rose to 54,508 on Saturday, while the toll rose by 14 to 312, PTI reports.

8.29 pm: Manipur’s tally of Covid-19 cases rose to 2,756 on Saturday as 55 more people tested positive for the infection, while one more fatality pushed the toll to six, PTI reports. The number of active cases in the state stands at 1,051.

8.28 am: Three more Covid-19 patients died in Assam on Saturday, taking the toll to 101, while 1,457 new positive cases pushed the states coronavirus count to 41,726, PTI reports, quoting Health Minister Himanta Sarma.

8 am: Andhra Pradesh, which has seen a surge in cases over the past two weeks, surpasses Delhi as the third-most affected region in India. As of Saturday evening, Andhra had 1,50,209 infections, while Delhi had 1,36,716 cases.

7.50 am: West Bengal on Saturday reported its highest single-day rise in deaths – 48 – and cases – 2,589. The state now has 72,777 total infections and the toll rose to 1,629, according to PTI.

7.45 am: Senior Jharkhand BJP leader Chandreshwar Prasad Singh recovers from Covid-19 and has been discharged from a hospital in Ranchi, PTI reports.

7.40 am: The Odisha government issues guidelines to private hospitals, nursing homes and labs to conduct Covid-19 tests through Rapid Antigen and RT-PCR methods, according to a notification issued by the health and family welfare department.

  • India reported a record 57,117 new cases on Saturday morning, taking its total to almost 17 lakh. The total number of coronavirus cases in the country is now 16,95,988. The toll was 36,511.
  • The Union health ministry on Saturday said India’s Case Fatality Rate currently stood at 2.15%. It is lowest since the lockdown started in March. Meanwhile, the Centre decided to allow the export of indigenous ventilators.
  • Odisha and Nagaland registered their highest single-day rise in new cases. In Odisha, the tally is now 33,479 with over 1,600 new cases while Nagaland’s total count stands at 1,823 with 130 fresh infections. Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh’s tally crossed 1.5 lakh with over 9,000 new cases.
  • Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting him to overrule Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal’s order cancelling the Delhi government’s decision to open weekly markets and hotels in the “Unlock 3” phase amid the coronavirus crisis. The deputy chief minister called the LG’s decision unfair and claimed that five lakh families were without work because of the closure of weekly markets.
  • Union minister G Kishan Reddy said that all the states must replicate “Delhi’s model” to combat the coronavirus crisis. Delhi’s daily count of cases has significantly decreased over the past few days and the government claims that the recovery is constantly improving.
  • Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former Andhra Pradesh minister Pydikondala Manikyala Rao died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Vijayawada. The senior politician was admitted to a hospital in Eluru 20 days ago. He was shifted to a private hospital in Vijayawada a week ago when he complained of breathing problem.
  • Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said they were planning to reopen schools, colleges and educational institutions from September 1. “However, final decision will be taken by the Centre,” he added.
  • The second round of serological survey began in Delhi on Saturday. The five-day survey will cover all districts. A senior government official says 15,000 samples would be collected from August 1 to 5, in different areas and from different age groups. A sero-prevalence survey involves testing the blood serum of individuals to check for the prevalence of antibodies against a particular virus.
