Union Home Minister Amit Shah told ANI in an interview on Tuesday that there is no link between the National Population Register and the National Register of Citizens.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday led a protest march in Kolkata. She accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of trying to create confusion in the minds of people about the Citizenship Amendment Act by issuing contradictory statements.

The Union Cabinet cleared a proposal to update the National Population Register even as protests against the amended Citizenship Act and the National Register of Citizens continued. It approved more than Rs 12,695 crore for the census and to update the database.

Earlier in the day, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi were stopped from entering Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut district to meet the families of people killed in protests against Citizenship Amendment Act. They are reportedly on their way back to Delhi.

In the national Capital, people defied prohibitory orders to gather in Mandi House and marched towards Jantar Mantar. Swaraj Abhiyan leader Yogendra Yadav led the protest.

The Citizenship Amendment Act seeks to grant citizenship to people of six minority religious communities from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh – but excludes Muslims from its purview. Therefore, the Act has been alleged to be anti-Muslim. In the Northeast, protestors have alleged that the Act will dilute their ethnic identities.
