A special court on Wednesday convicted four of the five accused in the 2008 Jaipur bomb blasts case, in which at least 71 people were killed, News18 reported. The court acquitted the fifth accused, identified as Shahbad Hussain, due to lack of evidence.
Three accused in the case are still absconding. Two other accused had been killed in the Batla House encounter in September 2008.
The convicts’ sentencing is likely to take place later in the day, News18 reported.
As many as nine bomb blasts took place in Jaipur on May 13, 2008 within a span of 15 minutes at different locations.
Initially, an organisation called the Indian Mujahideen claimed responsibility for the attacks. However, the Union Home Ministry said a Bangladesh-based terrorist organisation, the Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami, was suspected to be behind the attacks. Initial police investigations also pointed to the role of the group in the attack.
More reports are awaited on Wednesday’s convictions.
