Exit polls predicted an easy victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies in Maharashtra and Haryana on Monday. Chief ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Manohar Lal Khattar look set to come back to power for a second straight term. Almost every exit poll predicted more than 200 seats for the BJP-Shiv Sena combine in Maharashtra.
Voting in 288 Assembly constituencies in Maharashtra, 90 Assembly seats in Haryana, and bye-polls to two Lok Sabha constituencies and 51 Assembly seats across 17 states ended around 6 pm. The results will be announced on October 24.

10.28 pm: The bye-election in Nanguneri became necessary after Vasanthakumar resigned following his election to Parliament. A court released the MP on bail. “There is no explanation for why I have been brought to the police station,” The News Minute quoted Vasanthakumar as saying. “If they are treating an MP like this, it means they are insulting Parliament itself.”
10.27 pm: Congress MP from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu, H Vasanthakumar, was arrested earlier in the day for staying in Nanguneri Assembly constituency in the district in alleged violation of poll code rules, reports PTI.
10.04 pm: In Maharashtra, a teacher died of heart attack earlier in the day while performing election duties in Kolhapur’s Karvir constituency, reports ANI. She was identified as Sarjerao Bhosale.
9.51 pm: Clashes between Congress and BJP workers reported earlier in the day at an election booth in Kaithal, Haryana, reports ANI. A man was injured in the incident. Hansi Superintendent of Police Virendra Vij says police had to use “a little force” to tackle the situations and disperse the crowd.
9.15 pm: AIMIM leader from Aurangabad Imtiyaz Jaleel tells ANI he had gone to the Kat Kat Gate area in Aurangabad to speak to party workers. He alleges NCP members attacked AIMIM workers and calls for action.
9.05 pm: Nationalist Congress Party and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen workers clashed in Kat Kat Gate locality of Maharashtra’s Aurangabad city, reports ANI. “After voting concluded, clash erupted between workers of two parties. Situation is under control,” says an unidentified police official.
9 pm: As of 6 pm, voter turnout in Gurugram, Haryana, was an abysmal 52.33%, according to the Election Commission.

8.39 pm: “Mumbai city and suburbs recorded 44.74% turnout by 5 pm,” an Election Commission official tells PTI. “The final voting percentage would, however, go up by at least 9% as long queues were observed outside many polling booths even after the expiry of the official deadline for voting [6 pm].”

7.02 pm: An average of six polls in Maharashtra predicts the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance will win 213 seats, while the Congress-NCP may secure 61 seats. Other parties, including the AIMIM and VBA are expected to win 14 seats.
7.00 pm: In Haryana, Dushyant Chautala-led Jannayak Janta Party is expected to secure five to nine seats, and the Indian National Lok Dal may secure 1 seat. Other parties are likely to win seven to nine seats, according to the Republic-Jan ki Baat exit poll.
6.56 pm: According to The Republic-Jan ki Baat exit poll, BJP is likely to win 52 to 63 seats in Haryana, and 15 to 19 seats may go to the Congress.
6.54 pm: The ABP News exit poll projects 204 seats for the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance, and 69 seats for the NCP-Congress coalition. Other parties, including Prakash Ambedkar’s Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi and Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM, are likely to secure 15 seats.

7.55 am: In Haryana, the BJP is locked in a tight contest with the Opposition Congress and the Dushyant Chautala-led Jannayak Janta Party for 90 Assembly seats. The state has over 1.83 crore voters, including 85 lakh women and 252 transgenders, and 19,578 polling stations have been set up.
7.45 am: In Maharashtra, the Shiv Sena is contesting 124 of the 288 Assembly seats while the saffron party and other allies are contesting the rest. The Congress is contesting 146 seats, the Nationalist Congress Party on 117 seats. There are 3,237 candidates in the fray from among a host of different parties, and eight crore people are eligible to vote in the polls.

7.30 am: Prime Minister Narendra Modi urges those eligible to turn up and vote in “record” numbers. “Elections are taking place for Haryana and Maharashtra assemblies,” the prime minister tweets. “There are also bye-polls taking place in various parts of India. I urge voters in these states and seats to turnout in record numbers and enrich the festival of democracy. I hope youngsters vote in large numbers.”
7.20 am: The voting will be held till 6 pm. The results will be announced on Thursday.
7.10 am: Tight security arrangements are in place, with more than three lakh personnel from state police and central forces deployed in Maharashtra. Over 75,000 security personnel have been mobilised for polls in Haryana.
7.05 am: Uttar Pradesh will have bye-polls for 11 seats, followed by six in Gujarat, five each in Bihar and Kerala, four each in Assam and Punjab, three in Sikkim, two each in Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan, and one seat each in Arunachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Puducherry, Meghalaya and Telangana, PTI reports.
