The Centre tabled the amendments to allow quotas for upper castes in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, the final day of the Winter Session. The bill, which seeks to allow reservation for economically backward upper castes, was passed in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the passage of the bill and said it would ensure justice for all sections of society.
Meanwhile, Kashmiri Indian Administrative Services officer Shah Faesal resigned from the civil services and is likely to join politics ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections later this year.

The Uttar Pradesh government has asked district magistrates in the state to explore the possibility of companies running temporary cow shelters under their Corporate Social Responsibility programmes.
