Exit polls released on Friday showed that the Congress is likely to win Assembly elections in Rajasthan, while the race will be tight in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

Earlier in the day, the government appointed Krishnamurthy Subramanian, an associate professor at Indian School of Business the new chief economic adviser for a period of three years. The post had been lying vacant since Arvind Subramanian resigned in June this year.

Meanwhile, a senior Uttar Pradesh police official has said the police have decided to focus on the alleged incident of cow slaughter that triggered violence in the state’s Bulandshahr district on Monday and not the murder of police inspector Subodh Kumar Singh by suspected protestors.


Exit polls: Congress likely to win Rajasthan, TRS in Telangana; tight race in MP, Chhattisgarh

The Congress is likely to take back control of at least one large state months ahead of the General Elections next summer, showed exit polls released on Friday after the Assembly elections. All exit polls predicted a comfortable win for the Congress in Rajasthan. In Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, however, the race will be tight, with exit polls divided between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the Opposition Congress.

Exit polls predicted the Telangana Rashtra Samithi could stay in power in Telangana, and the Opposition Mizo National Front will unseat the Congress after it ruled for two terms. Only one exit poll was available for Mizoram.

Polling underway in Telangana and Rajasthan

Polling began for all 119 seats in the Telangana Assembly and 199 of 200 seats in Rajasthan on Friday morning. In the Rajasthan elections, 2,294 candidates are in the fray. The non-governmental organisation Association for Democratic Reforms had reported that of the 2,188 candidates it analysed, 320 are facing criminal cases. As many as 1,821 candidates, including Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, his nephew T Harish Rao and 12 other cabinet colleagues are in the fray in Telangana.

The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved an agriculture export policy to push towards the government’s commitment to double farmers’ income by 2022, the government said.
