Suspected militants escaped after a gunfight with security personnel in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district on Monday morning, reports said.
Security forces purportedly withdrew from the site following a clash with civilian protestors began soon after the gunfight broke out, Kashmir Reader reported. Initial information said several civilians sustained injuries in the clashes.
The gunfight occurred during a cordon and search operation launched by security personnel in the Sangran Imam Sahib area around 3 am, Greater Kashmir reported. An unidentified official said the operation was called off after the militants used the darkness in the early hours of the morning to escape. “The searches were intensified in the area,” the official said. “But no contact was established with the militants.”
The local administration has restored internet services after temporarily suspending it in the area.
