Security forces on Thursday shot down six suspected militants in two separate gunfights in Baramulla and Anantnag districts of Jammu and Kashmir, PTI reported. “Four militants were killed in Arwani operation in Anantnag district while two ultras were eliminated in an encounter at Kreeri in Baramulla,” said an unidentified police official.
Personnel from the Army, the Jammu and Kashmir police force and the Central Reserve Police Force launched a cordon-and-search operation in Athoora area of Kreeri, the Greater Kashmir reported. The militants reportedly fired at the security forces, which triggered a gunfight.
Mobile internet services were suspended in Baramulla and Sopore areas, according to the Rising Kashmir.
The official said that the two militants were affiliated to the Lashkar-e-Toiba but their identity was yet to be ascertained.
In the second encounter in Bjibehara’s Arwani district, four militants were killed. The police recovered arms and ammunition from both the sites.
The security forces displayed banners at several places near the encounter site, warning people not to venture closer as there could be unexploded bombs or grenades. The display of such banners has been added to the standard operating procedures after seven civilians were killed in an explosion after an encounter in Kulgam last week. Separatist group Joint Resistance Leadership called for a shutdown after the deaths of the civilians.
The state police on Thursday arrested an over-ground worker of the Hizbul Mujahideen in Kupwara and recovered arms and ammunition from his possession, ANI reported. A case under relevant sections was registered and an investigation is underway.
