The Gandhinagar Police detained around 300 workers and leaders of the Congress on Tuesday during a farmers’ rally organised by the party to seek farm loan waivers, PTI reported. The Congress workers, including state chief Amit Chavda, were taken into custody when they were marching towards the Gujarat Assembly.
They were released later. The police said the Congress had permission only to organise a gathering of farmers and party workers and not for a rally. The protest was largely peaceful but a police constable was injured in an incident of stone pelting, Superintendent of Police KF Badolia told PTI.
The Congress workers wanted to march towards the Assembly complex on the first day of the two-day Monsoon Session. After being released, Chavda said although the party workers could not “gherao” the Assembly, the programme was a success. He said his party would continue to put pressure on the government on farm loan waivers.
Meanwhile, in Chhattisgarh’s Bilaspur district, the police baton-charged Congress workers at their office after some of them went to minister Amar Agrawal’s home to protest against his statement that the party was garbage. More details on this are awaited.
