Delhi and Gurugram received heavy rain on Tuesday morning, inundating major roads which led to massive traffic blocks during morning rush hour, reported NDTV.
School children and their parents were reportedly stranded for hours on flooded roads in Gurugram and were forced to turn back home. A few schools in Gurugram declared a holiday due to the weather.
Traffic blocks were reported on Delhi-Jaipur Expressway and near Signature Tower, reported ANI. “Our team is trying to make the traffic movement smoother,” Gurugram Assistant Commissioner of Police Heera Singh told IANS.
The Delhi Traffic Police have tweeted several alerts asking commuters to avoid certain roads. Inderlok Chowk, RTR T-point towards the airport, Mahipalpur market, Vasant Valley School and Andheria Mor to Vasant Kunj were reportedly inundated. In July 2016, traffic on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway – between Rajiv Chowk and Hero Honda Chowk – was stuck for more than 12 hours following heavy rain.
Heavy rain accompanied with lightning was reported from around Indira Gandhi International Airport, Teen Murti Bhavan and RK Puram, among other areas, reported ANI. Noida and Ghaziabad also received light rain on Tuesday morning, reported NDTV.
Some areas in Dhaula Kuan and Palam Mod were waterlogged following the rain. Thunderstorms between 3 am and 4 am led to uprooting of trees, power cuts and waterlogging.
Meanwhile, hundreds of commuters in Delhi metro trains were stranded during the morning rush hour. A periodic maintenance operation could not be finished on time due to heavy rains, thus delaying trains by 15 mins to half an hour, the Hindustan Times reported. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation imposed a temporary speed restriction for trains travelling between Subhash Nagar and Tilak Nagar stations, an official said.
The temperature in Delhi dropped by a few degrees on Tuesday. On Monday, the temperature was around 33 degree Celsius while it was around 26 degree at 7 am on Tuesday. The Palam observatory recorded 101 mm of rain in 24 hours from 8.30 am on Monday while the Safdarjung observatory recorded 50 mm of rainfall, according to Skymet Weather. Around 47 mm of rain was recorded in six hours between 2.30 am and 8.30 am on Tuesday.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rain at isolated places over Uttarakhand, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, SubHimalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Konkan, Goa, Telangana and coastal Karnataka on Tuesday.
