Five people have died and seven are in hospital in Shamli district of Uttar Pradesh after allegedly consuming spurious liquor, PTI reported on Wednesday. One of the deceased persons had allegedly supplied the liquor to the others and consumed it himself.
The incident took place on Tuesday at Kamalpur village near the Uttar Pradesh-Haryana border, Shamli Additional Superintendent of Police Shalok Kumar said. Three people died on Tuesday and two on Wednesday.
The persons who are ill are in serious condition in different hospitals, Kumar said. After the incident, police suspended a sub-inspector and four constables for negligence in duty.
Police have filed a case against the deceased person who had supplied the liquor and other unidentified vendors under various sections of Indian Penal Code and Excise Act.
