At least 22 people died in Sudan on Wednesday after a boat sank while crossing the Nile river in the northern part of the country, AP reported, citing Sudan’s news agency SUNA. Twenty-one of the deceased are students, while one woman is a hospital employee.
The boat was carrying more than 40 students to school in the River Nile state. Authorities have not yet announced the ages of the students.
Rescue services personnel have begun searching for survivors but have not yet recovered any bodies, SUNA said. Officials suspect a technical failure caused the boat to sink.
More details are awaited.
