The Congress on Tuesday alleged that there were 42 lakh duplicate entries in Rajasthan’s voter list. The Opposition party held a press conference after it submitted a memorandum to the Election Commission highlighting alleged irregularities in the document ahead of the elections in the state.

A delegation of senior Congress leaders comprising former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Commitee chief Sachin Pilot, CP Joshi, Avinash Pande, and Vivek Takha met officials from the poll panel to demand an inquiry into the matter, PTI reported.

The memorandum was submitted to Chief Election Commissioner OP Rawat. “It would be imperative for the [Election] Commission to intervene and ensure preparation of a sanitised final electoral roll in view of the inconsistencies highlighted in the report to ensure a free and fair election in the state of Rajasthan,” the memorandum said.

Congress leader Vivek Tankha, who leads the party’s legal department, expressed dismay over the commission’s alleged inaction over the party’s allegations of that 65 lakh names in the Madhya Pradesh vote list were duplicated. The party also claimed that there was an unprecedented increase in the number of additions to the voter list over the last one year.

Pilot alleged that the panel’s data indicated that the entries under the duplicate names have the same name, gender, father’s name in constituencies across the state.

The Congress leaders alleged that were several cases where more than 100 names were registered to a particular address and asked the panel to extend the last date for filing objections to the election rolls in Rajasthan beyond the current deadline of August 21.
