Three pedestrians were injured after a car crashed into security barriers outside the United Kingdom’s Houses of Parliament on Tuesday, reported BBC. The Scotland Yard said they have arrested the driver, a man in his late 20s, on suspicion of terrorism offences, according to Reuters.
“Given that this appears to be a deliberate act, the method, and this being an iconic site, we are treating it as a terrorist incident,” Reuters quoted London Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu as saying.
The Houses of Parliament are surrounded with security barriers of steel and concrete. Streets around Millbank, Parliament Square and Victoria Tower Gardens have been cordoned off.
“At 0737 hours (12.07 pm Indian time) today, a car was in collision with barriers outside the Houses of Parliament,” The Guardian quoted the Scotland Yard as saying. “The male driver of the car was detained by officers at the scene. A number of pedestrians have been injured. Officers remain at the scene. We will issue further information when we have it.” Officials added that none of the injuries were life-threatening, according to Reuters.
Metropolitan Police said the counter terrorism command is leading the investigation. The Westminster tube station was closed following the incident, Metropolitan Police tweeted.
The driver, who is not believed to be known to security forces, was not cooperating with the police, Basu told Reuters.
